Edge of Tomorrow Movie Review
First off the picture above is my very own poster and it's pretty awesome! Secondly, all I can say about this film is wow. It is such a great feeling to watch and love a film that you had low expectations for. Tom Cruise recently hasn't been delivering anything great and I didn't think this would be much different. Now the complaints I have about this film aren't really about the film itself. The marketing was done horribly and I hope word of mouth overcomes this. The trailers in my opinion were very poor and strange and does not do the film justice. Nowadays we are used to seeing some pretty amazing trailers and being disappointed with the final product, but this is the exact opposite. From the trailer this film felt like a blend of Groundhog Day, Elysium, and one of Cruise's most recent films, Oblivion. Edge of Tomorrow seemed like the typical summer sci-fi film that recently haven't been too impressive. My final complaint of the film is about the title. I recently found out that the film is based off the book "All You Need is Kill" which in my opinion is a pretty awesome title! Now you would think they would want to attract the fans of this book by keeping the title, but instead choose a generic and safe title. All this aside, the content was all there.
There are certain films that really aren't worth chucking out the extra cash for 3D, IMAX, and/or IMAX 3D, but this isn't one of those. At the seven story IMAX screen at AMC Lincoln Square 13, the film was absolutely breath-taking. The special effects were truly top notch and so awesome to see. Like I said my expectations were not very high at all but the film was fun from the beginning! We are introduced to William Cage, Cruise, as an inexperienced officer who is falsely labeled as a deserter and forced into war against these alien enemies. The aliens are called Mimics because they are able to mimic human strategy and weaponry making them virtually unbeatable. After getting beat down for a while, humans develop these combat jackets that are like robotic exoskeleton/suits that finally win them some victories. Humans storm a beach as part of a huge plan to cripple the enemy forces and it turned into a massacre as somehow they knew they were coming. This beginning battle sequence was very intense and in your face and also reminiscent of the iconic D-Day scene in Saving Private Ryan. Cage being inexperienced in combat dies rather quickly and brutally, but instantly wakes up back on the military base as if he had gone back in time a day.
The tag line for the film is "Live. Die. Repeat." because Cage gains the ability to reset the day until the humans win the battle, as long as he dies. Before meeting Emily Blunt's character Rita, she is plastered on buses and billboards everywhere as a symbol of hope for the war effort. When Cage first meets her on the beach she dies, but before she does she tells him to come find her tomorrow, or technically yesterday. Now one of the reasons why this movie so great was because it was just so fun to watch. There was so much perfectly placed humor throughout and they played heavily on the comedic aspect of having to die over and over again. Tom Cruise really showed us that he still has it with this performance and him and Emily Blunt had great chemistry as actors and on screen in their characters. There is enough quality character development and great story to accompany the typical sci-fi action and explosions. The cinematography was great and the fighting sequences were amazing too. Not only was Blunt's performance great but she is extremely beautiful to go along with her acting talent. Also another con of once again, the marketing and advertising, is that they didn't show Bill Paxton in any of the trailers which I think was a mistake because he is so good and hilarious in the film!
Edge of Tomorrow wasn't perfect but it was pretty damn great. It was such a pleasant surprise and not just a mindless movie with aliens and explosions. Derived from good source material, great performances from the cast, and more laughs than you think you'd have from this kind of movie, Edge of Tomorrow was worth both my time and money. Don't be fooled by the poor marketing. I was not at all interested in this film before I began to hear such good things, and now I see what everyone else was talking about. Much better here than he was in Oblivion, and just as visually beautiful as a film, Edge of Tomorrow was great summer blockbuster that I give an 8 out of 10. Love or hate Cruise, you might be surprised by this film because I know I was.
