Pacific Rim Movie Review
Pacific Rim looked to me like it was going to be a mix of Godzilla and Transformers. Whether that was recipe for disaster or a masterpiece, I really didn't care because there was no way I was missing it. Directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam who also stars in one of my favorite shows, Sons of Anarchy, I had fairly high hopes. I came for big robots fighting even bigger aliens and I definitely wasn't disappointed in that aspect, but there's no denying the weaknesses of this film.
So for starters that movies was a must-see in IMAX. If you happened to have missed out then Blu-ray is the way to go. The best part of this movie was definitely the CGI and I don't mean that in a bad way either. Not that the rest of the movie was so bad, just that the effects were so damn good. Now obviously CGI can't alone carry a movie so there were some very enjoyable aspects that helped salvage Pacific Rim from doom!
These monsters named Kaijus began coming out of the Pacific Rim in 2013 and the human race was forced to set aside their differences and pool together their resources to fight back; thus the Jaegers were created. After some pretty sick shots of Kaijus destroying many populated cities we are introduced to Raleigh Becket(Hunnam), a cocky Jaeger pilot who works with his brothers. These huge humanoid machines require two pilots who must be linked through their minds to work effectively as a team, each pilot controlling one half of the body.
After a major accident Raleigh decides to leave the pilot days behind him. For years the world thought that the Kaijus had been defeated but they were wrong. This is where the story starts to get weak for me. Idris Elba plays Stacker Pentecost, commanding officer on the Jaegar projects, and comes to re-recruit Raleigh to save the world from the impending threat. Idris Elba was great as expected but I feel like some of the characters were too forced and didn't feel sincere enough for me.
Like I've already said, this movie was kick-ass! But the story was very lacking and there wasn't much depth to it. The charcters seemed a bit underdeveloped and there were a bunch of cliche moments. But I did really enjoy the humor throughout the film, as cheesy as it was. Pacific Rim was a visually stunning film that was very fun to watch, just lacked substance. I do recommend it, but don't count on fantastic story to carry you through. I give Pacific Rim a 6.5 out of 10.
