2 Guns Movie Review

"You never heard the saying, never rob a bank across from a diner with the best donuts in three counties?"
-Bobby

2Guns was a real treat to watch. It wasn't particularly ground-breaking or original but it was super entertaining and hilarious. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are awesome actors on their own and I really enjoy their movies but I never thought they would make such a good team on screen. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, 2Guns was a pleasant surprise that I didn't expect. I had put off watching it for a while but was finally convinced by a few friends and we had a good time watching it.

Individually, Wahlberg and Washington have made some pretty awesome action and drama films, but this kind of funny I don't think I've seen from them. Although Pain and Gain was hilarious in it's own way. Anyway the premise of this film is about two agents, Bobby played by Denzel and Stig played by Mark, who are undercover together but are not aware of each others true identities. Bobby is an undercover DEA agent and Stig is an undercover naval intelligence officer. Together they are tasked to infiltrate a huge drug cartel in Mexico and take the top dogs down. When initially they fail they are left for dead by their agencies and are pitted against each other.

These two bring so much wit and sarcasm to their performances and work so greatly with each other. The film never takes itself too seriously despite some dangerously real situations. It never lacks comedy and never gets too cheesy. That being said, it sometimes goes over the top and becomes too predictable. There was an interesting love interest between Bobby and Paula Patton's character Deb. Also a DEA agent, it is revealed that they shared a past but are currently in an in-between phase where motivations are blurred. There are multiple antagonists in the film and many innocents are killed before these two are forced to put their differences aside and work together. Trust didn't come easy for them but they were backed into a corner with no else to trust.

The back and forth jokes really worked between Mark and Denzel. Something about seeing these two together was just so entertaining and I really enjoyed it. There were some really dark points that helped balance the film out and there were solid supporting actors that made the film flow. The plot was lacking at some points but I didn't go into the film expecting spectacular writing. I got nothing less than what I was expecting and was glad to see two talented actors work together for a good film. I give 2Guns a 6.5 out of 10. Not an amazing film but definitely one to enjoy with the boys.
