X-Men: Days of Future Past Movie Review
Professor X: You took the things that mean that most to me.
- Magneto: Maybe you should've fought harder for them!
I don't even know where to begin, I really don't. I have never been one to bash the previous X-Men films too harshly but I have come to accept which one were trash and which ones weren't. Bryan singer, the director of X-Men and X-Men 2 arguably the best two films of the franchise up until today, directed X-Men: Days of Future Past. That was the first sign of potential greatness just to know that someone who respects and appreciates the source material is at the helm of this film. The second thing that made this film so appealing was ensemble cast. I love the original X-Men cast from Hugh Jackman to Ian McKellen to Patrick Stewart and I was always under the impression that no one could play their roles so well. That belief was challenged in X-Men: First Class when Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy took over the younger roles. I was in love with their performances but it wasn't until this film where I saw all four actors together that I truly appreciated all their takes on these characters individually. This film had everything I could have asked for. Drama, comedy, action, amazing script writing and beautiful CGI. Bryan Singer gave a breath of fresh air to this faltering franchise.
Knowing that this film dealt with time travel, I was expecting to be a little confused but the writing was exceptional. For both the comic book nerds and the casual movie fans, this film laid out the plot in a very straight forward manner without leaving out any key points. There weren't any points during the movie where I was really confused as to what was going on. So the main plot points of the film go as follows. The mutants are in a future where the sentinels, robots created to target and kill mutants, have just about wiped out the mutant race and they are struggling to survive. We see Xavier and Magneto side by side, which was a huge treat, accompanied by Kitty Pride, Blink, Bishop, Storm, Iceman, Colossus, Warpath, Sunspot, and of course Wolverine. The film starts off with some really intense action and does not hold back on the brutality. We soon come to find out that Wolverine is the one tasked to travel back in time and save Mystique from being captured so the sentinels never exist.
Logan awakes in his 1973 body to a nearly impossible task; uniting Xavier and Magneto at a time where they could not be farther apart. To not ruin some key and very enjoyable parts of the film, I'll refrain from going into too much detail, but Quicksliver played by Evan Peters was one of the highlights of the film. He had been bashed in the months leading up the film due to his quirky appearance but he was hilarious and just great in his role. Speaking of hilarious, this film was honestly so witty and that was one of my favorite parts about it. As usual Wolverine is a funny asshole and there is never a shortage of smart remarks and jokes on his part. I could never ask for better Wolverine than Hugh Jackman. The way he is forced to interact with the younger Xavier, Magneto, and Beast is just so great perfectly done. And let's not forget the newest big face of this franchise, Mystique played by Jennifer Lawrence. This film gave her such an integral role in the plot and while I really enjoyed it I know it is also a marketing technique. Regardless of the fact, she was great in her role and brought much depth to an already complex character. I look forward to seeing her reprise her role as Mystique in the future.
There were some scenes that really stuck with me like the scene between Xavier and Magneto on the plane, the Quicksilver scene, and a couple of sick shot towards the end. I really cannot find anything to say negatively about this film at all. Peter Dinklage played a wonderfully evil Bolivar Trask and did not fail to impress. There was a beautiful blend and balance of everything that makes a great film. Wonderful cast, great writing, amazing action and special effects. There were numerous nods and easter eggs thrown in for the comic book fans as usual and there was of course a great after credit scene that you cannot miss! Sure there have been some major flops, cough Origins cough, but Singer made sure to set the record straight and cleaned everything up quite nicely. I can't stress enough how excited and satisfied I am after watching this film. Seeing it on opening night is always a treat because the energy in the air that you experience with a theater full of die hard fans doesn't compare to anything else! Also having Bryan Singer himself sitting two rows behind you is pretty sick, I can't lie! I give X-Men: Days of Future Past a 10 out of 10. You tell me what was wrong with the film that it would deserve anything less.
