American Hustle Movie Review
May contain some spoilers!!!
American Hustle is definitely one of my favorite movies of
2013. It was directed by David Russell the man who was also behind Silver
Linings Playbook, The Fighter, and Three Kings! I admit I went in with high
expectations and I sure was not disappointed.
This was an all-star
cast consisting of Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer
Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner who were all great. The film was carried more by
the great acting than the plot itself which I didn’t find to be amazing or too
original. Nonetheless very enjoyable and at points hilarious.
So on to the plot.
Bale plays a low level con man named Irving Rosenfeld who’s married to Rosalyn,
an unpredictable selfish woman played by Jennifer Lawrence. She was surprisingly
so funny. Almost all of her scenes consisted of her scheming or just showing
off how ignorant she was, in the funniest way possible! But over the years
Irving has had a mistress names Sydney Posser played by Amy Adams. Together
they begin scamming people and are actually a great team, but Irving refuses to
leave his adopted son with Rosalyn.
.
Irving and Sydney see
no end in sight for their seemingly perfect scheme until Richie Di Maso
(Cooper) an FBI agent comes along and exposes them. Having no choice in the
matter, they are forced to cooperate with him to make some high profile
arrests. Suddenly they’re thrown into a world of politics, corruption, and
gangsters.
The man Di Maso wants
most is the mayor Carmine Polito played by Jeremy Renner. Charismatic and
genuinely good, Polito’s main goal is the betterment of the people of his city
even if it means getting his hands dirty.
There are some twists
and turns throughout the film but nothing that will really blow you away, aside
from the fantastic acting of course. Especially from Amy and Jennifer both
playing very strong female roles. There was also a surprise guest star
somewhere along the way that will definitely make you chuckle.
All in all with a
solid ending and a decent script overall, the cast was able to make this film
not only enjoyable but memorable as well. Fun to watch all this talent come
together on the silver screen for a great performance. I give American Hustle an 9 out of
10.
