Short Term 12 Movie Review

I thought I had seen every great movie of 2013 but obviously I was wrong after seeing this. Short Term 12 was a beautiful film directed by Destin Cretton starring  Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr. Sure this wasn't a summer blockbuster or an Oscar nominee but it was fantastic. Now this won't be a terribly wordy review because while there isn't to much to the plot in length, it makes up for in heart.

We see this movie from the perspective of Grace, a 20-something year old supervisor who works at a foster home for at risk children. We're thrown into her everyday life where we get to see how she works with these children. She's loving and strict at once and cares very much for the children she works with. She is also in a long term relationship with her co-worker Mason.

What I loved about the film was how little we knew about the characters at the start, but by the finish we know the stories behind each of these individuals and really care for them. I mean this in the sense that each character has depth to them and the film takes its time in really showing them to us. Two- thumbs up for Brie and John for doing such a spectacular job and bringing their characters to life, along with the rest of the cast.

There is one kid at the foster home, almost 18 year old Marcus who has to deal with the fact that he has very little time left at the home. This mixed with tensions and issues with other kids made for a volatile situation. Having to deal with their own problems, Grace and Mason have to really work to keep their lives in order.
I give Short Term 12 a solid 9 out of 10. It was beautifully done and made me feel all sorts of emotions in its short 90 minutes. I recommend this to pretty much anyone who wants to watch truly good movie and take a break from all the explosions and bad asses from main stream cinema!
