L.A. Confidential Movie Review
L.A. Confidential is the first movie review I am doing for a movie that was released prior to 2013! Released in 1997 and directed by Curtis Hanson it became an instant classic due to it's superb acting and irresistible story. Starring Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Russell Crow, James Cromwell, and Kim Basinger. Keep in mind that Guy Pearce and Russell Crow weren't big names at the time. All together the film was nominated for 9 Oscars and won 2 of them.
L.A. Confidential takes us into the LAPD during the 1950's. We follow three different cops investigating the same case. Jack Vincennes (Spacey) is the sleazy cop who sells headlines to a publisher played by Danny DeVito. Jack is in the narcotics division and is constantly in contact with other divisions of the LAPD.
Bud White (Crowe) is an aggressive cop with a troubled past. He has a personal vendetta against men who beat on women and has no problem getting his hands dirty to serve justice.
And then we have Edmund Exley, the straight edge cop who won't break a single rule and does everything by the book. Exley even rats on some fellow officers to get promoted and serve "justice". But when a murder is committed at a restaurant and among the dead is a police officer, Bud White's former partner, many questions arise. And somewhere in all this Lynn Bracken (Basinger) a celebrity look-a-like hooker gets involved and is a key part in all of it.
This movie has more twists and turns than you can imagine and just when you think you know what's going on, the table cloth is pulled from underneath you and you're left wondering what the hell just happened. The script is beautifully written and the actors are just phenomenal. This is a fantastic crime drama, with what we would call now a star-studded cast. It will keep you on your toes the whole way through while you try to connect the pieces. I give L.A. Confidential a 9.5 out of 10.
