Gravity Movie Review
This review is long overdue considering Gravity was one of my favorite movies of 2013! If you didn't see this film in a movie theater, especially IMAX, you really missed out on an incredible experience. Some movies are just meant to be seen on the big screen, like the Avengers for example, and this is one of them. Directed by Alfonso CuarĂ³n and starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock Gravity brings us into outer space and our deepest fears to life.
I remember when initially seeing the trailer for Gravity in early 2013 and thinking how ridiculous it looked. But I assure you that there's much more to this film than people just floating around in space. The idea of space is one that is common yet still a mystery to the everyday person. Very few people can say that they've traveled in space. But Gravity brings being in space to a whole new level, in a very different way than Star Wars and Star Trek does. We follow Ryan Stone (Bullock) and Matt Kawolski (Clooney), two astronauts who find themselves in the midst of a space shuttle destruction and their struggle to stay alive and return to Earth.
Two things really stood out to me in this film and they were the CGI and raw feeling of despair. The visuals were absolutely beautiful. It's as nice as you can imagine Earth would look from its orbit; gigantic and overwhelming. Also the background stars and sunset are amazing to see on a big screen. I don't know about you, but I can't think of a more hopeless and helpless situation than floating away into darkness in space. This is still a movie so I'm sure the physics of it all were not 100% accurate, but for the sake of argument I'd say watching this movie is going to be as close to the feeling of being in space that most of us are going to get. You feel almost everything that that characters are feeling and it's scary as hell!
Aside from all of this I think the writing was fantastic as well. The character development was great and was incorporated into this unique story perfectly. Clooney and Bullock were wonderful and this was a well deserved Oscar nominee for Best Picture. I give Gravity a 10 out of 10 because it was a movie experience I'm sure I'll never forget.
