The Perks of Being a Wallflower Movie Review
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favorite book-to-film adaptations ever. Based on the novel of the same title written by Stephen Chbosky, he himself directed the film starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller. "Perks" tells a coming of age story that felt familiar but yet so real.
We follow three teenagers, Charlie (Lerman), Sam (Watson), and Patrick (Miller) living their lives and having to deal with problems that life throws at them. There are many heartfelt dramas out there with the same premise, but yet am I to see one that was made as amazingly as "Perks". For one it was a very talented cast that brought the characters to life and made the viewer truly connect with them. Every adult has lived through some variation of what these kids feel and go through and this movie touches everyone in different ways.
Never did I feel like I was being cheated throughout the movie in terms of the storytelling. "Perks" delves into some pretty dark, raw themes like sexuality, mental illness, and sexual abuse, while staying true to the characters. Many scenes were beautiful rather than cheesy and really make you feel for the characters and their story. The amount that you can relate to some of these characters is genuine and you're left with a feeling of real tenderness.
"Perks" gets all these messages across without becoming a generic, mushy high school drama. And to top it off I thought the soundtrack was perfect. I give Perks of Being a Wallflower an 8.5 out of 10 and really recommend this to anyone who wants to experience a beautiful story of growing, suffering, and friendship.
