The Monuments Men Movie Review

For starters I'd like to say that my opinion of The Monuments Men is higher than most critics out there and probably other reviews you might have read. The Monuments Men is a different twist on World War II movies as it focuses on a group of men tasked to retrieve stolen art and other important pieces of culture that Hitler intended on destroying. It's such a great story in and of itself and I think George Clooney as the writer and director did a suitable job of putting it on the big screen.

The cast is full of huge names which I think doesn't do a movie many favors. A movie can still be good, but if you see a trailer with all these great actors and the movie is anything less than fantastic then you may be disappointed. Matt Damon and George Clooney take the male leading roles while Cate Blanchett takes the only female leading role in the film.

Clooney plays Lt. Frank Stokes who gathers a team of architects, museum curators, and art historians with the intention of entering Germany towards the end of the war and saving priceless art. The problem I had with the film was that some important parts felt rushed while other scenes of less importance seemed to drag on. I don't feel like they introduced the characters properly and I didn't feel much connection with them. This by no means is commenting on the actor's performances because they very good and entertaining, it's just the way the story was told that was lacking.

I can say that I enjoyed the second half of the movie more than the first just because I think that's when it began to pick up for me. The actors did have good chemistry and I had some enjoyable laughs throughout the movie. Overall the film was better than OK but not quite great, which I think is a shame because it has some pretty powerful themes and lessons to teach. I give The Monuments Men a 6 out of 10.
